Rain Gear Kid — v0.3

The charter's soak-resistance experiment becomes a specific six-year-old whose armful of yellow umbrellas is both her silhouette and her coping, while the contest over whether she has a tactical job stays open.

Why: Charter §8 describes a resistance stat; the casting sheet describes a frightened six-year-old holding the roof over her friends.

Legend

She is the Roof of the Line. Where she plants herself, the sky over that stretch of block stops belonging to the enemy. She never takes safe ground; she takes the ground the enemy is about to open on. The Roof does not retreat. What the sky sends down, the Roof takes first.

Suburb

She is a six-year-old in full rain gear on a dry August afternoon, carrying five open umbrellas she cannot see over. Two of them are bent. Other kids walk around her because she takes up the width of the sidewalk. She will not walk past the Big Kid; she goes around the parked car instead, which takes longer, and she does it every time. When something is about to get somebody wet she is already there, holding the yellow up, and she says nothing about it afterward. The gear is on when she comes out and it is still on when she goes in.

Current draft

Rain Gear Kid is six and slower than everyone she covers. She carries five mismatched umbrellas open in one armful, all school-bus yellow with charcoal ribs, so her outline at tactical zoom is a cluster of domes wider than she is tall and riding above everyone's heads. The slicker, pants, and boots repeat the yellow; one umbrella has a clear vinyl panel she watches through. The reason being wet frightens her is deliberately unresolved rather than invented to look complete, and so is her civilian name.

Being wet frightens her, and the gear is how she stayed outside instead of going in. The job followed the gear. She is terrified the whole time and always standing where the cover is needed; she has never connected those two facts.

What changed

  • Grew the charter's soak-resistance experiment into a six-year-old White girl, size S, no Myth analog.
  • Corrected her gender: v0.1 wrote "his resistance"; the sheet says female.
  • Made an armful of five open umbrellas her silhouette and her mechanic.
  • Fixed the palette at school-bus yellow over charcoal ribs, grips, and toggles, plus one clear-vinyl viewing panel.
  • Established the moral engine: being wet frightens her, so she keeps everyone else dry.
  • Added her fear of the Big Kid, fifteen and XL, as a standing adjacency.
  • Kept v0.2's contested status unresolved, and rejected every reading in which she notices her own courage.

Why it changed

Charter §8 describes a resistance stat; the casting sheet describes a frightened six-year-old holding the roof over her friends. This revision builds the second one, because a resistance number can be handed to any wetsuit, and a kid who is scared and stands there anyway cannot.

Evidence and playtest marginalia

  • Nothing has been built for this kid. sim/constants.gd and sim/simcore.gd contain no rain-gear entry, no resistance term, no umbrella object, and no cover rule; the five umbrellas, the arc of cover, and the counter are proposals in prose. No number here was measured in a session.
  • docs/seventh-street-charter-v8.md §8: roster table entry, "Immune to spray and soakers, double from direct hits. Keeps a soaker meta breakable."
  • docs/seventh-street-charter-v8.md §7: the Stygian rule, "Same for the rain gear kid. Write the counter when you write the resistance, not after." The counter is written down; the resistance it counters does not exist yet.
  • docs/characters/roster-mix-v1.csv row 13: age six, White, female, size S, no Myth analog, umbrellas that shield other kids set against being slow to move with all the gear.
  • artbook/content/revisions/rain-gear-kid/v0.2.md: the contested declaration this revision carries forward unresolved — her "distinct roster purpose is not yet persuasive."

Rejected or alternate directions

  • A brave-all-along reveal.
  • A single large golf umbrella in place of the armful.
  • The umbrellas as a joke the kid is in on.
  • A snorkel mask, a wetsuit, or a fixture carrying the same resistance in one prop.
  • Any moment of self-recognition.
  • Clinging or transparent wet-weather fabric.
  • Heat, sweat, or the gear as a body joke.
  • A hard five-umbrella cap before evidence exists.
  • Rain on the block.

Still unresolved

Featured question: can she be terrified the whole time without the umbrellas looking like somewhere to hide?

Secondary unknowns:

  • whether cover is a distinct job or a narrower fixture or wetsuit interaction wearing a whole kid;
  • which direct hits double her soak — balloon only, or the wagon too;
  • whether an open umbrella stops an aerial drop;
  • what she does when the cover is needed past the Big Kid.

Can she be terrified the whole time without the umbrellas looking like somewhere to hide?
