Suction Blaster — v0.3

The archer seed becomes a specific ten-year-old whose range card, under-the-breath narration, and deliberately quiet clothing all agree, and whose one real weakness is that a single bolt marks a kid without ever calling one in.

Why: A range card is a joke until it is a document, and the seed had the object without the kid who keeps it.

Legend

He is the one steady hand, and the Register of Distances is his charge. Every crossing, every hedge gap, every open stretch of the long road has been walked and entered, and the Register does not forget. He walks the distance before he writes it, and the Register is open to the whole street.

Suburb

He is a ten-year-old with a foam pump squirter and an index card on a shoelace at his hip. The card is ruled in pencil, because pencil survives getting wet, and it lists the yard-to-yard distances he walked one afternoon when nobody else was outside. Spare blanks live in a manila envelope in his back pocket. Every number on the card is counted in his own paces, so it is exact for him and wrong for everybody he hands it to.

Current draft

The Suction Blaster is a ten-year-old Latino boy of ordinary build who carries a seafoam-mint foam pump blaster level in both hands: a long mint tube and slide grip, unmistakably a pool toy. His clothing is deliberately quiet — a loose opaque t-shirt, knee-length shorts, gunmetal shoelaces, a squared flat-brim cap — so the toy carries the only loud color he owns. A manila index card hangs from a shoelace eyelet. Which house on this street is his remains deliberately unresolved rather than invented to look complete.

He appointed himself the one steady hand between a Hose Kid tethered to a spigot and a Super Soaker who abandons a held position to chase whoever is funniest. One bolt marks a kid; it does not call anyone in, so the most accurate kid on the block finishes nothing alone.

What changed

  • Gave the seed an originating kid: a ten-year-old Latino boy, size M, from docs/characters/roster-mix-v1.csv row 6.
  • Established the range card as his defining object: one manila index card on a gunmetal shoelace eyelet, its numbers his own paces, exact for him and wrong for anyone else.
  • Made his narration quiet rather than performed.
  • Placed him on the ranged roster between the tethered Hose Kid and the shorter-ranged Super Soaker.
  • Assigned the seafoam-mint, manila, and gunmetal palette so the toy stays the loudest thing he carries.
  • Translated the sheet's low-per-bolt weakness into character: he marks kids and cannot call one in alone.

Why it changed

A range card is a joke until it is a document, and the seed had the object without the kid who keeps it. This revision builds the kid the card belongs to: a ten-year-old whose accuracy is real, whose numbers are his own paces, and who has never once found any of it funny.

Evidence and playtest marginalia

  • artbook/content/roster.yml: fourteenth public seed, 2026-07-26; decisions.md (2026-07-26) records Claira ratifying the name. Charter v8 §8 does not name him, and this dossier invents no §8 citation.
  • docs/characters/roster-mix-v1.csv row 6: "Has a range card. Everyone mocks the range card until they need the range card." The card, the deadpan, and the 40 feet come from that cell.
  • Nothing has been built for this kid: no sim/ implementation, no TUNING.md entry. Every number here — 40 feet, one bolt per pump cycle, low soak per bolt — is a proposal from a spreadsheet cell, not a finding.
  • Correction: artbook/content/revisions/suction-blaster/v0.1.md carries no evidence block. Its only source was a foam suction-shooter product image whose rights were never established, so nothing was publishable.
  • Contested: decisions.md (2026-07-25) rejects refill mechanics; charter §8 gives the Super Soaker a spigot and the Towel Kid a clothesline. His draw stroke sits on that collision.

Rejected or alternate directions

  • A military-cosplay reading with camouflage, face paint, or a tactical vest.
  • Scopes, laser sights, and any optic that reads as a firearm.
  • The range card as a bit he is in on.
  • A prodigy whose numbers are always right.
  • A sad-boy explanation for what his actual life is missing.
  • The card as a lucky charm or an accuracy bonus.
  • Prone firing positions and rooftop perches.

Still unresolved

Featured question: is his seriousness moving rather than joyless when the rest of the street mocks the range card?

Secondary unknowns:

  • his civilian name;
  • what his actual life contains that the war outranks;
  • whether the sheet's 40 feet is a total reach or a margin over another model;
  • where each draw stroke takes its water without reopening the rejected refill chore;
  • whether the mint tube still reads as a pool toy at tactical zoom.
